The RDAA states there is still a shortage of physicians in rural areas.

The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) has criticised a Federal Government report that suggests there is no longer a shortage of physicians in rural and remote areas.

The Rural Medical Workforce and Distribution Programs and Policies report shows the ratio of physicians to population in rural and remote areas has improved by 25 per cent.

But RDAA president Dr Paul Mara states the report is inaccurate because it relies on a system that classifies the areas as the same as massive coastal and regional cities.

“The figures that they are publishing are based on the ASGC-RA classification which we utterly reject as a classification for rural and remote areas,” he said.

“If we use the old classification it would clearly show that while we have had an increased number of doctor’s going into regional centres coastal areas outside the capital cities … they are not necessarily moving into the smaller towns.”

Dr Mara states the RDAA is sceptical about the methodology and predictive analysis used in the report.

“We’re not certain that we are going to have the same number of overseas physicians into the future and we are not certain that the number of medical students, gratefully again that the Government has increased the supply of, are actually going to rural practices as a viable alternative.”
