Detroit, MI (Sports Network) – Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is set to return for the 2011-12 season.
It will be the 20th NHL season for the 41-year-old blueliner, who is again a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman. He’s already won the honor six times.
Terms of the one-year deal were not revealed, but the Detroit Free Press reported it to be worth $6.2 million.
Lidstrom has been with the Red Wings since the 1991-92 season and has been a part of four Stanley Cup championships. He played all 82 games for the second straight year in 2010-11 and was the team’s second-leading scorer with 62 points, having recorded 16 goals and 46 assists.
“I think if I would have taken a step back from how I completed last year, it could have been a different situation for me,” stated Lidstrom during a teleconference Monday. “It could have been a different decision for me. Coming off this season helped me to make this decision.”
Selected by the Red Wings in the third round of the 1989 draft, Lidstrom has compiled 253 goals with 855 assists for 1,108 points in 1,494 NHL games. He is third in franchise history in assists and fourth in points.
The native of Sweden also has 54 goals and 129 assists for 183 points in 258 Stanley Cup playoff games. He captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in Detroit’s 2002 championship run.
