Free dental clinic helps kids that really need it

“Go ahead and bite down for me sweetie, bite down all the way,” a dentist told a tiny girl at Friday’s free dental clinic at the Community Health Partners building on Bozeman’s 19th Avenue.

A group of Gallatin Valley dentists volunteered their time to put on the first of its kind clinic. It was for area children with urgent dental needs.

They’re children who do not regularly see a dentist, either for financial reasons or being geographically isolated.

Teeth were pulled and roots were canalled. Dentists worked to make the experience comfortable, but the work had to be done. Dental health is particularly important at their stage of life.

“Children actually die from dental infections each year,” stated Dr. Jane Gillette, one of the dentists volunteering for the clinic. “It seems like something that would happen in a third world country, but it happens all across our nation every year.”

The four dentists at the clinic worked on 14 children Friday. While Dr. Gillette calls this a trial year, she is looking forward to putting it on again in 2012.
