THE UK’S BESTSELLING EBOOK OF 2011.

Benjamin Daniels is angry. He is frustrated, confused, baffled and, quite frequently, very funny. He is also a GP. These are his confessions.

A woman troubled by pornographic dreams about Tom Jones. An 80-year-old man who cannot remember why he is come to see the doctor. A woman with a common cold demanding (but not receiving) antibiotics. A man with a sore knee. A young woman who has been trying to conceive for a while but now finds herself pregnant and is not sure she wants to go through with it. A 7-year-old boy with ‘tummy aches’ that do not really exist.

Confessions of a GP is a witty insight into the life of a family doctor. Funny and moving in equal measure it will change the way you look at your GP next time you pop in with the sniffles.

Priscilla Chan, Mark Zuckerberg’s Girlfriend Gets Attention as Facebook Goes Public

Priscilla Chan, the long time girlfriend of Mark Zuckerberg, earned her medical degree on Monday from the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Medicine, according to Seattlepi.com.

“I’m so proud of you, Dr. Chan : )” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page.

But the world’s eyes were on her Friday for another reason: Zuckerberg’s company, Facebook, began trading publicly this day reaching as much as $21 billion of value today.

Chan and Zuckerberg have been dating since Zuckerberg was a student in Harvard. They reportedly met at a party while waiting in line for the bathroom.

Chan told The New Yorker that she thought Zuckerberg was “this nerdy guy who was just a tiny bit out there.”

Since she is Chinese-American, she has triggered interest in Zuckerberg to learn Chinese. They have also been spotted vacationing in the country.

When Chan moved to Palo Alto to live near her boyfriend, she famously made him sign a “contract.”

“One date per week, a minimum of a hundred minutes of alone time, not in his apartment and definitely not at Facebook,” according to Sarah Lacy’s book Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good.

Zuckerberg stated his girlfriend wants to be a pediatrician and inspired him to create a new tool on Facebook that grants users to add their organ donation status.

The tool enlisted more than 1,000 new donors in a matter of days, according to Donor Life.

So far, the couple have not announced an engagement nor a ring has been spotted on Chan’s finger.

Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath will not play in Saturday’s game at FC Dallas (8:30 p.m., The Comcast Network) due to a flareup of concussion symptoms.

MacMath did not travel with the team to Dallas, according to a spokesperson for the Union.

He suffered the concussion when he took a knee to the head in the May 8 game at Seattle.

MacMath was listed as “out” on the Major League Soccer injury report published Tuesday of last week, which made it likely that he would not play against the New York Red Bulls this past Sunday. But he was upgraded to “probable” in the Friday injury report two days before kickoff.

As I watched Sunday’s game, I did not notice anything especially discernable regarding signs of concussion after-effects. But it certainly is not uncommon for after-effects to flare up at a later point, whether someone is cleared to play or not.

MacMath’s absence means that either Chase Harrison or Chris Konopka will begin Saturday night. Since MacMath has played every minute of every league game this season, I do not know who is more like to start. So do not bother asking.

(Sorry, but I had to. I know you would have asked and I honestly do not know the answer.)

At least the Union will not be the only shorthanded team in the game. As I noted Thursday, FC Dallas could be without many of its regular starters, including goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Friday night.

Ever feel judged when you bring some non-organic, foreign-grown, out-of-season melon to a potluck, or forget your reusable bag?

Msnbc has this funny anecdote from a woman trying to purchase a fruit platter from a snobby organic produce guy in Seattle:

And he was like, ‘If you want fruit platters, go to Safeway. We’re organic.’ I finally purchased a small cake and some strawberries and then at the check stand, the guy was like ‘You didn’t bring your own bag? I need to charge you if you didn’t bring your own bag.’ It was like a ‘Portlandia’ skit. They were so snotty and arrogant.

Her story underscored a new study that found that exposure to organic foods correlated with higher levels of self-righteousness. Researchers at Loyola University in New Orleans divided people into groups, and showed people organic foods and others at non-organic and comfort foods.

Test subjects were later surveyed on moral situations and how much time they would volunteer to help a needy stranger.

The organic group was more judgmental and less likely to help out, researchers found. The study was published this week in the journal Social Psychological & Personality Science.

Woman Suffering from Pica Eats Rocks

ABC News(NEW YORK) — “Mmm-hmm, yeah. They crunch on my teeth,” stated Teresa Widener while eating her favorite snack — rocks.

The 45-year-old mom of two who lives in Bedford, Va., and works with special-needs children, explained: “I like that it has an earthy flavor.”

Widener doesn’t wash them; sometimes she just sucks off the dirt. Other times, she takes a hammer and smacks them into bite-size pieces.

It’s a behavioral and/or mental-health condition called pica, the Latin word for magpie, a bird that will eat anything.

“People will eat anything when it comes to pica,” stated Dr. Jordana Mansbacher, a clinical social worker and therapist who specializes in eating disorders, including pica. “They will eat toilet paper. They will eat fabric. They will eat carpet. They will eat paper. They will eat wood. They will eat clothing. They will eat skin. They will eat metal.”

Widener stated rocks were an emotional crutch, but she also stated she has anemia and that the rocks help treat her iron deficiency.

Anemia is fairly common among women, especially pregnant women, according to Mansbacher.

“Pregnant women tend to be anemic,” stated Mansbacher, because their nutrients go straight to the fetus. “And a lot of times they develop cravings … for ice, which is rich in zinc, and soil and clay, which is rich in iron.”

But around the world and even in parts of the South, Mansbacher said, even non-pregnant women crave and eat soil because of iron deficiency. Widener is not pregnant and stated she has been eating rocks for more than 20 years.

While the practice shouldn’t be hidden or stigmatized, Mansbacher said, eating rocks and soil is unhealthy; it can introduce parasites, and rocks can puncture or tear internal tissue, causing bleeding.

“I suggest that a woman have a blood test to determine if there are any mineral or vitamin deficiencies,” Mansbacher stated via email. “If there is a deficiency, I would then ask your M.D. for a treatment plan to include vitamin or mineral supplements or an alteration in one’s diet.”

Watch the full story on 20/20 Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

An international bestseller and the basis for a hugely successful film, Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was one of the defining works of the 1960s.

A mordant, wickedly subversive parable set in a mental ward, the novel chronicles the head-on collision between its hell-raising, life-affirming hero Randle Patrick McMurphy and the totalitarian rule of Big Nurse. McMurphy swaggers into the mental ward like a blast of fresh air and turns the place upside down, starting a gambling operation, smuggling in wine and women, and egging on the other patients to join him in open rebellion. But McMurphy’s revolution against Big Nurse and everything she stands for quickly turns from sport to a fierce power struggle with shattering results.

With One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Kesey created a work without precedent in American literature, a novel at once comic and tragic that probes the nature of madness and sanity, authority and vitality. Greeted by unanimous acclaim when it was first published, the book has become and enduring favorite of readers.

Astana will be developing medical tourism, which is one of the instructions given by the Kazakh President. At present, the number of people travelling around the world in search of medical care amounts to more than three million. Kazakhstan intends to compete with such countries as Israel, Germany, China and South Korea in terms of providing highly qualified medical assistance.

Last year, about 300 foreigners visited Kazakhstan’s capital for medical treatment. Basically, they are the citizens of the CIS countries and Central Asia. Clinics of the national medical holding located in Astana have already become “a development locomotive for domestic medicine” with over 111 innovative technologies introduced over four years.

Lyazzat Aktayeva, Deputy Chairman, National Medical Holding JSC
“For this year, we have planned 38 innovative technologies. Each subsidiary organization looks into its field, where there is still a niche and demand. They are also studying the disease epidemiology.”

Inna Rei, Travel Company Director
“I know well the medical base of such luminaries as Israel, the Czech Republic, Germany and Switzerland. I can also see what we have here. I mean the equipment, which simply do not have analogues in the world. It is natural that we should make the most of it. I think that we will be happy and proud to be doing it.”

In order to develop medical tourism, the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies intends to open a corresponding website on the Internet and to develop a “road map” direction.

The Northern Colorado Health Network in Fort Collins will offer free testing this day for people at risk of hepatitis C, the most common chronic blood borne infection in the U.S. and the leading cause of liver transplants.

Hepatitis C, caused by the hepatitis C virus, causes the liver to form small scars that can join together over time to prevent blood from flowing through the liver.

Unlike hepatitis B, there is no vaccine for hep C, but it can be treated with new antivirals and a variety of different protocols, stated Amy Warner, program manager for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environments Viral Hepatitis Program.

There are current treatments that are more effective for the most commonly recognized type of hepatitis C and thats encouraging, Warner said. National Testing Day is designed to raise awareness about hepatitis C, and Warner stated she hopes people who may be at risk will go get tested.

Everyone has that point at which they are willing to be tested, she said. There may be people who begin thinking I did shoot up that one time in college and always wondered, or I got a tiny sick after a blood transfusion. Those people may be willing to come in and be tested.

The National Hepatitis Testing Day is a day for people at risk to be tested and for healthcare providers to educate patients about chronic viral hepatitis and testing. More than 76,000 Coloradans are believed to be infected with hepatitis C; but only slightly more than half have been reported to the say health department, Warner said, and many do not know they have it.

These people are walking around not knowing they have an infection and not getting treated, she said. An estimated 123 Larimer County residents have chronic hepatitis C, according to a report from the say health department. The severity and duration of hep C can range from mild symptoms lasting a few weeks to a serious lifelong illness leading to cirrhosis and/or liver cancer.

A easy blood test can help detect hepatitis C.

The Colorado health department recommends testing for people who received a blood transfusion before 1992, ever used IV drugs, had sex with a person with hepatitis C or were born between 1945 and 1965.

Thats the baby boomer issue, Warner said. They are people more likely to have had a blood transfusion before 1992 when we didnt have a test to screen blood supply. They may have been living with it for more than 20 years when we begin to see cirrhosis, fibrosis and liver cancer.
