Henderson County residents learned some of the many ways to keep the Earth green and how they can help by making small changes during the Environmental and Conservation Organization’s Earth Day celebration at Blue Ridge Community College Saturday.

“The focus this year is sustainability and how we can be the ideal stewards we can possibly be,” stated David Weintraub, executive director of ECO and the event’s organizer.

Doreen Blue, a teaching assistant at Hendersonville Elementary, played games with students using plastic bottles and other items that could be recycled.

“We are trying to make fun games and teach recycling,” she said. “We want to show the children there are other uses for these items and teach them to reuse and recycle.”

Blue stated the students had an assignment to make animals out of recyclable materials and create a new “ecosystem.”

“We have a combination bee, alligator and fish animal and my favorite, the buckagator,” she said.

Richard Freudenberger, with Back Home Magazine, set up a vendor booth to share information about sustainability.

“I am a member of ECO, and I wanted to be a vendor to be a source for people to get information,” he said.

Beckett Honicker of Higher Ground was on hand to show people how his business is harvesting rainwater.

“We have systems that can harvest rainwater for any outdoor water usage,” he said.

Music, storytellers and performance artists, skill-building workshops, and games were part of the celebration throughout the day.

Music at the free festival included area talent such as Jenny Arch, Ellen Trnka, Pam and Don McMahon, Carol Deurmit, Tom Fisch, Flat Rock Playhouse Youtheatre “Rising Stars” and the Atomic Sisterhood.

Some of the featured events this year included a Watershed Festival, which consisted of a portable living stream, enviroscapes, fresh water turtles, fishing games and pond dipping.

A Bulb Exchange program sponsored by the BRCC Environmental Club granted attendees to exchange inefficient incandescent blubs for new CFLs.

And a children’s recycled art area let the young or young at heart turn recycled materials into high art, Weintraub said.

Throughout the day, sustainability workshops, featuring discussions on such topics as low-cost solar, raising backyard chickens and beekeeping, took place.

Healthy food was available at the festival from the Hendersonville Community Co-op, and a tailgate market offered produce from area farmers.

Green vendors — such as a solar energy exhibitor and a home health specialist — were on hand to answer questions.
