Earthquake Update 37 – Canterbury District HealthBoard
Former staffand residents of Hagley Hostel gathered to state theirfarewells to the building earlier this week beforedemolition starts later next week. The building has beenextensively damaged by the September and Februaryearthquakes and is extremely unsafe.
The first step inthe demolition process, provided it’s safe to doso, will be to rescue a collection of old researchrecords that have been stored in the building as well asheritage items, such as lead-lights, doors, and otherspecial features of the building, which have been identifiedto have historical significance.
Salvaging of these itemsis expected to start later week. However, items can ONLYbe rescued PROVIDED NO ONE’S SAFETY IS PUT AT RISK. Theitems WILL NOT be retrieved if there’s any sign safetycould be compromised.
Agencies are working together to help peopleprepare for the additional challenges of winter.
A lot ofwork has already gone into restoring heating to homes thatlost their primary source and making homes weathertight.
The Clean Heat Hub established earlier this yearhas made 25,000 calls to identify priority cases, based ondata from a variety of sources. About 4,000 heating unitshave been ordered, installed or repaired to date, includingheat pumps and different varieties of solid fuel burner.Orders are being placed at up to 1,000 per week.
If youare still without your main form of heating or your houseisn’t weather tight, then contact 0800DAMAGE or email heating@eqr.co.nz.”

Parking & Shuttle UpdateThe CDHBand the Christchurch City Council Transport & GreenspaceTeam have been working to try and find a solution to longerterm parking for CDHB staff and patients. Despite a numberof options being discussed we are still dealing with a lossof more than 800 parking spaces and trying to findalternative sites is proving difficult. The ideal solutioncontinues to be parking behind the Horticultural Centre andthe CDHB has provided minibuses to escort patients from thisarea during the day and for staff at night; security haveaccess to these minibuses 24/7. Staff are asked to walkwhenever possible because patients and visitors that mayfind the walk to the hospital difficult will be givenpreference for the shuttle. The shuttle picks ups and dropsoff at the main hospital entrance. The parking areabehind the horticultural centre area is well lit and an areahas been designated for staff working afternoon shifts toensure they are within view of the security team when theyreturn to their vehicles. There is also security availableto escort people to and from the parking area. A whitegazebo is located to the side of the parking area and staff, patients and visitors should wait here for escorts or theshuttle bus. Armagh St Gardens
This automobile park isnow open and there are no time restrictions. Access is fromRolleston Ave at the Armagh St bridge. Staff and patientscan use this sealed parking area and access the hospital viathe Botanical Gardens. There is no security in place, sorecommend this area for day shift parking.

The boilwater notice has been lifted, however, the testing programmehas not included private wells and bores, so we advisepeople accessing drinking water from these sources toorganise ongoing private testing. Residents shouldcontact the Council if their reticulated water supply is notworking on 941 8999.
People should still try to conservewater because Christchurch’s water supply and waste waterinfrastructure remains delicate.
If you’re returning toyour home or business for the first time since thequake
Residents returning to their properties for thefirst time since the boil water notice has been lifted, andnew tenants or property owners, should turn on all the tapson their property and let them run for a minimum of fiveminutes. If after five minutes the water is stilldiscoloured they should continue to run it until it isclear.
Business owners or managers returning to theirpremises should also run taps for five minutes. Businessowners are also advised to organise a registered plumber tocheck their water systems prior to switching water on at thestreet. Leaks in the water pipe work on their site or intheir building could cause further damage to theproperty.

SHORTSHOWERS SHOW YOU CARE – TAKE CARE WITH WATERUSE
Where you have water available at home, regardlessof what part of Christchurch you live in, please use itsparingly as sewerage systems are broken and not able tocope with massive volumes of waste water.
This applies whenshowering – remember that short showers show you care – andwhen flushing the toilet, ‘if it’s yellow let it mellow;if it’s brown flush it down’.
Don’t waste waterwashing the car!
