Crosswalk timer is not a signal for people in cars

Judy from Goodells: “I do not know how many of you have noticed the countdown light at Lapeer and 10th. I sure like it and it doesn’t give you an excuse for running red lights anymore.”

You’re scaring me. This is serious. The Federal Highway Administration worries those timers will get someone killed — because of people like you. That timer has nothing to do with red lights or cars. It is a signal to pedestrians that the walk interval is about to end. In Michigan, a pedestrian may not enter the crosswalk after the timer begins counting. Unfortunately, both pedestrians and drivers use the timers to rush into intersections without looking or thinking. If you are in a car, do not look at the timer. And especially do not jack-rabbit through the intersection because the timer reaches zero. You’ll get somebody killed. Maybe yourself. Pay attention to the overhead signals and traffic around you.

No Name from Marysville: “I live in the 1400 block on New Jersey in Marysville. Been there for over 50 years and nobody has parked on the street before. Now we have a couple households with two-car driveways parking their vehicles on the street. It’s a small street and children are running across and nearly getting hit.”

Mike from Cottrellville Township: “I’d like to respond to Bill from Marysville regarding President Obama. Bill, do not push the race issue. He was elected because middle class Americans, white, black, Hispanic, etc., wanted a voice in Washington.”

Jo from Fort Gratiot: “Bill, President Obama will be a two-term president. He’s doing a wonderful job as a first-time president. He did not get in because he is a black man. He got in because he is a good man… President Obama will be a two-term president and I will do my ideal to have him re-elected, at least in this part of the state.”

No Name: “It was not his race that got him elected. He believed in himself and so did the voters. Bill from Marysville, your attitude is appalling. We are a nation composed of many races. Let’s work together and help one another. Not segregate each other.”

Taxpayer: “Year after year, month after month, we see tax breaks going out. … It should be that if you hire a worker, you get the tax break. Only when you hire a worker. That would be the ideal way to use the tax laws. Hire somebody, get a break. Don’t hire somebody, pay more taxes.”

Elaine from Port Huron: “About the first incident reported about the air traffic control problem at the Reagan International Airport. Some people may remember how gleeful President Reagan was when he announced the air traffic control union was busted. How ironic.”

Jim from the Township: “Short and sweet, do the actors and all the employees of the movies that get the tax credits in Michigan pay income tax on the money that they earn in the city and state?”

Yes, they pay taxes like everyone else (except GE).

No Name: “This is to the Times Herald and the people you have got in the paper supporting the bond proposal. Her and her husband are both professionals, a cardiologist and a dentist. They have no problem paying for this extra stuff. … Why do not you ever speak to people who cannot afford this stuff and have them in the paper instead of the people who are very well-to-do who see no problem with it?”

Is it their incomes or their intelligence that makes you believe they shouldn’t have an opinion on the school tax request?
