OTTAWA The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has updated a recall of dozens of whey protein products because they may be contaminated with salmonella.
On Thursday, CFIA added Jump 6 brand Strawberry Flavour Whey Protein, sold in 30-gram pouches and bearing codes 12.12 and 03364, to the list of recalled products imported into Canada by Vitalabs Inc. of Jonesboro, Ga.
The Jump 6 product was distributed in Ontario to clients of Canadian Gastric Balloon Inc. (CGBI) of Ajax, Ont., which is voluntarily recalling the product. No illnesses have been reported due to its consumption.
Dozens of other Vitalabs products, including Dr. Bill’s Choice Whey Protein Vanilla and Nature’s Pantry Whey Protein in various flavours, were recalled last week. For a complete product list, visit http://inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2011/20110311be.sh tml.
Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with the bacteria may cause salmonellosis, which can result in serious and sometimes deadly infections in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
For more information, consumers can call CFIA at 1-800-442-2342.
