Can Moderate Alcohol Consumption Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk?

The analysis including more than 365,000 participants from 19 countries revealed that moderate drinkers were 23 percent less likely to show signs of memory loss or Alzheimer’s. This particular likelihood was seen in 14 of the 19 countries, including the U.S., WebMD reports of the study.

While it is not exactly known how low alcohol consumption could reduce risk of dementia or memory loss, study researcher Michael A. Collins, PhD of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. says, “Low levels of alcohol may have anti-inflammatory effects on the immune system, heart and brain.”

Despite the analysis’ findings, experts stress that moderation is key.

“Non-drinkers should not take a drink for this purpose,” Christy Tangney, PhD, an associate professor of clinical nutrition at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, tells WebMD.
